The Jin dynasty was divided into two phases: the Western Jin (265-316) and the Eastern Jin (317-420). The Western Jin was founded by Sima Yan, who usurped the throne from the last emperor of the Cao Wei state and reunified China for a brief period. The Eastern Jin was founded by Sima Rui, a descendant of Sima Yan, who fled to the south after the invasion of nomadic tribes from the north. The Eastern Jin faced constant threats from rival states in the north, but maintained its cultural and political influence in southern China.
