The Song dynasty was a Chinese imperial dynasty that lasted from 960 to 1279. It was founded by Zhao Kuangyin (Emperor Taizu), who overthrew the Later Zhou dynasty and unified most of the China. The Song dynasty was divided into two phases: the Northern Song and the Southern Song.
The Song Dynasty is known for its achievements in culture, arts, science, technology, and commerce. Some of the innovations that emerged during this time include gunpowder, movable type printing, paper money, compass, and porcelain. The Song Dynasty also saw the development of Neo-Confucianism, a philosophical system that influenced Chinese society and government for centuries.
The Northern Song controlled most of the China until it was invaded by the Jurchen Jin dynasty in 12th century. The Southern Song retreated to south China and continued to resist the Jin and later the Mongol Yuan dynasty. The Song Dynasty eventually fell to the Mongol invasion in 1279, ending over three hundred years of cultural and economic prosperity.
