The Southern Dynasties were a series of four short-lived Chinese empires that ruled over the southern part of China from 420 to 589 AD. They coexisted with the Northern Dynasties, which controlled the northern part of China during the same period. The Southern Dynasties were based in Jiankang (now Nanjing), which was the largest city in the world at that time. The Southern Dynasties witnessed a flourishing of culture, especially in literature, art, and religion. Buddhism and Daoism spread widely among the people, and many famous poets, painters, and philosophers emerged.
